The Midwestern states might not have been the first to legalize pot in the United States, but they’re catching up. At the end of 2023, Ohio joined the club. That means the Buckeye State has turned into the Red Eye State, and we couldn’t be more excited.
In this article, you’ll get more clarity about Ohio’s cannabis landscape. We cover everything from new possession laws to how make your first purchase. And to make things more exciting, will share news bout TYSON 2.0’s upcoming launch in the state.
1. Is Pot Legal in Ohio?
In November of 2023, Ohio became the 24th state to legalize recreational marijuana. Adults over 21 are now allowed to possess 2.5 ounces of cannabis flower and 15 grams of extract. Like other states, legislators are confident that the new law will reduce illegal marijuana sales, limit the transportation of out-of-state cannabis, boost the economy, and supply a safer cannabis product.
2. Are There Recreational Dispensaries in Ohio Yet?
Recreational sales at dispensaries began in Ohio on August 6th at 98 locations. The state issued dual-use licenses to around 120 dispensaries to allow medical and recreational sales; however, these stores were first required to adhere to new regulations to sell recreational marijuana. So, Ohio residents should expect to see an increase in stores as more dispensaries meet requirements and new groups apply for licenses.
3. Are Ohio Dispensaries Cash Only?
Most of the dispensaries in Ohio only accept cash–a few dispensaries may accept some debit cards. Because marijuana is still illegal at the federal level, many credit card companies and banks refuse cannabis-related purchases on their networks. Until weed is federally legal, play it safe and bring cash to Ohio dispensaries. Several locations will have an ATM on-site but expect to pay a withdrawal fee.
4. What Do You Need to Buy Recreational Weed?
To buy recreational weed in Ohio, all you need is an ID and an acceptable form of payment (typically cash). Without an ID showing you’re 21 or older, the dispensary staff will not allow you into the premises–even with a full beard and bald head. Likewise, do not expect stores to accept credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, checks, or anything other than cash.
5. Is it Legal to Smoke Weed in Public in Ohio?
Despite the decision to make weed legal in Ohio, it’s still against the law to smoke or vape cannabis in public. Just like with alcohol use, consuming in public could result in fines and product confiscation or potentially your arrest. Marijuana consumption must take place on private property. It is also illegal to consume while driving or while parked on public property. So do yourself a favor and smoke up in a safe, legal space.
